Municipalities Where You Should Exercise Caution
An injury or fatal accident can happen anywhere in the state, even in smaller towns and communities. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, here are ten of the worst places for car crashes in Long Island, where you should exercise particular caution while on the road:
1. Hempstead
The town of Hempstead averages approximately 35 fatal accidents per year, which is about three per month. Between 2019 and 2023, the greatest number of deadly wrecks happened in 2021, when 40 such crashes were recorded. Since then, the number of wrecks has been decreasing each year, fortunately.
2. Brookhaven
A total of 169 crashes resulted in at least one death in Brookhaven over five years. The annual number of fatality accidents peaked at 41 in 2022 before declining slightly in 2023. Overall, these numbers suggest an approximate average of 34 fatality crashes happen every month, which is only marginally less than the numbers for Hempstead.
3. Islip
Over 300,000 people call Islip home — a number that can lead to crowded roads and a higher risk of being involved in a traffic crash. Over the five years from 2019 to 2023, 129 fatal crashes occurred. The year 2021 was the deadliest, with 32 fatal crashes recorded.
4. Oyster Bay
Oyster Bay saw 71 fatal traffic collisions between 2019 and 2023. Eighteen fatal accidents happened in 2020, and 17 more occurred in 2022. Unlike some other communities, there is no clearly identifiable peak to the number of fatality accidents. Instead, the numbers seem to ebb and flow from one year to the next.
5. Huntington
From 2019 to 2023, the town of Huntington in Suffolk County reported experiencing a total of 55 fatality crashes. This means that about one fatal wreck happens every three months. Although this does not seem like a high number, each one of these accidents can involve multiple individuals.
6. Smithtown
Smithtown, a small community in Suffolk County, recorded 38 fatal traffic accidents recently, including ten in 2021. The safest year for residents was 2019, when only three fatality wrecks happened in the area. From then on, the number of accidents always exceeded this low benchmark.
7. Glen Cove
Since 2019, this community of less than 30,000 people has experienced only two fatal accidents — one in 2019 and another in 2020. Although it has been five years since a fatal accident was recorded in Glen Cove, the risk remains for those who use the community’s roads.
8. East Hampton
From 2019 to 2022, the town of East Hampton only reported one fatality accident a year. Then, in 2022, there were three such crashes, a threefold increase from the previous year. Data is not available from 2023 to show whether this sudden spike was an anomaly or represented a trend of elevated fatal traffic wreck numbers.
9. Ronkonkoma
Ronkonkoma and Lake Ronkonkoma combined experienced only one fatal accident from 2019 to 2023. This deadly crash happened in 2022. Otherwise, any other traffic accident that would have occurred in Ronkonkoma would have been one that caused injuries or only property damage.
10. Long Beach
The town of Long Beach only recorded a single fatal car accident between 2019 and 2023. However, this serves as a reminder that dangers are present on the roads of even small and serene municipalities.
Recent statistics show that communities of any size can see fatal car crashes, no matter how remote or bustling the area may be.
How Serious Accidents Can Happen on Long Island
Top Causes for Fatal and Severe Injury Crashes
Although the Long Island area is unique, accidents happen in the area for many of the same reasons that they happen elsewhere. In addition to knowing those communities with higher fatal traffic accident statistics than others, you’ll also want to avoid these common examples of negligent driving behavior to stay safe:
- Speeding or violating other traffic laws
- Driving under the influence of any drug or alcohol
- Using your cell phone or trying to divide your attention between the road and an electronic device
- Aggressive driving or tailgating
- Not looking before you switch lanes.
In New York, you generally do not need to prove the at-fault party committed any of these or similar negligent actions to recover damages. This is because of the state’s “no-fault accident” laws that enable you to file a claim with your insurance company, regardless of which party was responsible for causing the crash.
